Suwon Chicken Street Alone: My Yongseong Tongdak Meal
Can you eat on Suwon Chicken Street alone? I did, at Yongseong Tongdak (용성통닭), where I ordered half original and half seasoned fried chicken after walking around Hwaseong Fortress. The staff were friendly, the chicken was crisp, and the portion was far more than I could finish.
My advice: go for the meal, but plan around the portion. I packed up the leftovers using the restaurant’s self-service supplies. That made dining alone workable, although carrying the food afterward was another thing to fit into the day. If you want a small, quick lunch with nothing to carry, this particular order may be a poor match.
Where to eat on Suwon Chicken Street
Suwon Chicken Street is a compact cluster of fried-chicken restaurants in the old-city sightseeing area. The Korea Tourism Organization’s street guide lists Yongseong Tongdak alongside Jinmi Tongdak and Maehyang Tongdak. My meal was at Yongseong; I have not compared all three.
Search your map for 용성통닭 본점, the main branch. English spellings vary, including Yongseong and Yongsung, so keeping the Korean name on your phone makes the restaurant easier to identify. Confirm that your selected result is in Suwon’s Chicken Street area before following directions.
Check the restaurant’s own current listing or contact it before making a special trip. A tourism listing for the street describes the district, not the opening hours of every kitchen. In particular, the street’s “Open 24 hr” label does not mean you can order chicken at Yongseong at any hour. Check the closing day, last order, and current menu separately.
What I ordered: original and seasoned half-and-half
I chose the basic original-plus-seasoned combination rather than a rib-flavored variation. The original chicken let me appreciate the crisp coating and tender meat; the sauced half added a different flavor without committing the whole order to one style.
The meal also came with fried gizzards and chicken feet. Those turned out to be among my favorite parts: the gizzards had a springy texture, while the feet offered something different from the larger chicken pieces. These were part of my meal, rather than extras I would assume every future order includes.
For a similar order, show the staff that you want original fried chicken plus seasoned chicken, half-and-half, and confirm the menu item and total before ordering. Half-and-half describes the split between flavors; it did not make my order a small solo portion. If portion size matters more than trying both flavors, ask whether the current menu offers a smaller option.
Was it comfortable to eat alone?
I walked in by myself and ate inside. The staff were kind, and I did not feel awkward sitting with a large meal. When plenty of chicken remained on the table, their concern felt friendly rather than pressuring.
That experience is why I would consider returning alone. It is still worth asking for a table for one when you arrive, especially if the room is busy; my visit does not establish a permanent seating policy.
The practical issue was appetite. Even after a substantial walk, I could not finish the order. I would think of this as a generous shared-style meal that a solo traveler can enjoy, rather than a neatly portioned individual lunch.
If you are comparing solo meals for the Seoul portion of your trip, my Namdaemun Hairtail Alley review describes a different experience: ordering one serving of braised fish at Jungang.
Leftovers matter when planning your day
There was a self-service packing area during my visit, and I used it to take the remaining chicken away. Before ordering, ask whether packing supplies are available if you expect to need them.
I would place this meal toward the end of a walking-heavy outing if carrying leftovers would be inconvenient. A bag that keeps a food container level is more useful here than another stop squeezed into the schedule. If you have nowhere suitable to store the food, decide whether the large order still makes sense for you.
How I fitted the meal around Hwaseong Fortress
Before lunch, I visited Janganmun Gate, Hwahongmun Gate, and Banghwasuryujeong Pavilion. I then ate at Yongseong and continued to Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, a café, and later Starfield Suwon.
For a simpler outing, use the fortress-area walk and chicken meal as the core, then decide whether you have energy for another stop. My full sequence is not a timetable you need to reproduce. Check the current opening arrangements for any attraction you want to enter, and leave room for a meal without rushing.
If Seoul is your base, the Seoul neighborhood guide for solo travelers can help with the broader accommodation decision. This meal is a useful addition to a Suwon visit, but I would not choose an entire Seoul base around one restaurant.
Is Yongseong Tongdak worth it for a solo traveler?
I enjoyed the crisp chicken, the generous sides, and the friendly atmosphere. Yongseong makes sense if you already want to explore Suwon and are happy with a substantial meal. I would be less inclined to order the same combination before several more hours of walking with no convenient place for leftovers.
You do not need a dining companion to recreate the part that worked for me: sitting down for good fried chicken after a walk. Just check the current menu, ask about the portion and packing, and give the meal enough space in your day.
